Gandhi National Memorial Society
Gandhi National Memorial Society (GNMS) was inspired and motivated by Gandhian Thought and Ideology and was privileged to work with Vinobaji in his involvement’s Bhoodan and Sarvodaya and Stree Shakti Jagran. She has been working in the social service area for the past 60 years. Her work is dedicated towards the assistance of destitute women and children, with a view to make them self-sufficient and contributing to the members of society. The aim has been to change society and its values so that women and children obtain their rightful place. She believes that women, if they make up their minds, can achieve higher summits to build their life. She has been awarded by the Central Govt. and State Governments. for Women and Child Development along with Gandhi Samman Award, Padma Bhushan Award, Jamnalal Bajaj Award, etc.
Past Activities GNMS
Rural Social Worker’s Training Course for women
Started in 1980, the program trained 342 trainees nationwide. By 1988, over 70% were found working in the social field.
Mahadev Printing Press
It was started in 1985 with the support of central social welfare board. Trained several women on earn and learn basis.
Khadi bhandar
In 1984 khadi bhandar was started as a suveniour shop to sell khadi and V.I. products with the support of KVIC. It was closed down in 1995 due to labor problems.
Tailoring course for women
the course was started in the year 1981-82 and trained 277 women.

Blind girls training program
With the support of Pune blind men’s association, GNMS conducted one batch of 50 trainees. The course included Braille Transcription, Mobility and household activities.
House helper training program
To increase the status and earning of housemaids, house helpers training was started. Rehabilitation of destitute women was the objective of this program. Initially government of India, then action aid, Late Shri N.K. Firodia sponsored this program.
Training to tribal women from Melghat
In Melghat, 120 tribal women from Amravati were trained in health, hygiene, and nutrition. Supported by the Maharashtra government, they now work as padaworkers to fight malnutrition.
Samadhi Baug
The GNMS tried to plant various plants in the 5 acres land near samadhi with the help of various organizations.
Training on Panchayati Raj
The first workshop for women elected in local self government was organized by GNMS with the support of Government of Maharashtra. Then C.M. late Shri Sudhakar Naik had inaugurated the workshop.
Life long literacy
To literate village women a project “Literacy through computers” was implemented in Purander Tahsil. More than 600 women from 12 villages were become literate through this project.
Condensed course for women
Two batches of condensed course were conducted by GNMS in Yerwada and Ramwadi slum and 60 SC/NT women were passed IV standard exam.
Awareness programs
On various issues like water conservation, HIV Aids, land mines, prohibition- Nashabandi and Peace Rallies were conducted by GNMS
Khadi exhibition
With the support of KVIC state level and district level khadi exhibitions were conducted by GNMS.
Youth Camps and Summer Camps
To propagate Gandhian thoughts and to inculcate Sarva Dharma Sambhav Youth camps and summer camps were organized in Assam and Maharashtra with the support of Govt. of India and Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti.

- To aid, assist, maintain and run the Samadhis of Kasturba and Mahadevbhai Desai. To maintain the museum where various relics objects of veneration , books, articles and things connected with Kasturba and Mahadevbhai and their way of life may be preserved.
- To carry on the activities of research on women’s various problems connected with their personal domestic, social, cultural, educational , development in all spheres.
- To carry on other activities for the advancement of education, art, science and health and to help and assist and to provide financial assistance for any other cause of general public utility regardless of religion, caste and creed.
- To organize, establish and finance educational institutions primarily for the education of women and to organize training programs, seminars, study groups on problems connected with women.
- To organize teams of dedicated social workers to convince and persuade people to accept the concept of womanhood as indispensible partners in life and integral part of society as practiced by Gandhiji.
- To organize aid, encourage, maintain, finance and execute the adult education with particular attention to the education of illiterate and uneducated adult women of the society.
Objectives of GNMS
- To establish, run and assist training centers of women and to impart specialized training both on the campus and off the campus to women in rural areas and also to propagate, organize sponsor and encourage the Khadi and Village Industries activities.
- To start, encourage, assist and carry on the activities in connection with development of Khadi and Village Industries and other rural and cottage industries.
- To establish and conduct training centers for training of artisans for undertaking the work in connection with the development of Khadi and Village Industries and Rural and cottage Industries.
- To open and maintain Bhandar/ shop for sales Of Khadi and V.I. products and rural and cottage industries products.
- Solicitly obtain or accept subscription, donations, grants, gifts, requests, trust etc. from any person, firm, corporate bodies, state or Union governments.
- Acquire by gifts, purchase, exchange, lease or hire or otherwise however any land, building and any property movable and immovable and of any estate or interest for the furthering of all or any of the objects of the institutions.
- Build, construct and maintain houses ,structures or building and alter, extend, improve, repair, enlarge or modify the same including existing buildings and structures and to provide and equip the same with light, water, drainage, furniture, fitting, fixers, instruments, apparatus and appliances and all other necessaries for the use to which each building is to be put or hold.
- Borrow or raise money with or without security or on the security of the mortgage, charge, hypothecation or pledge over all or any of the immovable and all movable properties belonging to the institution or in any manner what so ever
- Educate and train women social workers who may move from door to door and contact women with the view to making them aware of social obligations and domestic sciences with special attention to general rules of physiology, hygiene and child psychology.
- To organize conferences, seminars and lectures with a view to educating the women in the fields of their rights, duties, economic emancipation, necessity for having less children etc.
- To do all such acts and things as may be conducive to the social economic, educational and cultural uplift and integrated development of women and children.
Recognitions
The work done by GNMS is recognized by various institutions and governments and we received the following Awards. Out of which most of the awards are conferred on Tai
